TIGER STAFF SPOTLIGHT: RSE INSTRUCTIONAL AIDE ROBERT SPEAR

This is the first installment in the Tiger Staff Spotlight series where DSISD features staff members from each of the district’s seven campuses.

At 80 years old, Rooster Springs Elementary Instructional Aide Robert Spear has an education background that spans an impressive five decades.

While Spear has worn many different hats during his career from working in politics and serving as a minster … to working as a naturalist and teaching people how to survive harsh climates … teaching has been an important component of the roles in which he has served.

“Everything I’ve ever done, I have taught. That’s my life,” Spear said.

While working as a traveling consultant for the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) Sunday School Board, Spear’s interest in politics was sparked after being introduced to former president Jimmy Carter, who was the governor of Georgia at the time. “After I met Carter, we built a fellowship together and I visited his house many times,” Spear said.

That connection led Spear to being elected and serving two years on a committee that put forward names for state legislator positions, eventually leading to the successful campaign for a Louisiana Supreme Court Judge.

After three decades as a minister and working with the SBC, Spear became a high school teacher for 13 years in Georgia. He then served as a naturalist for five years for the Georgia Parks and Historical Sites at Fort Mountain State Park, teaching Native American folklore and all areas of nature.

For more than 50 years, Spear has taught wilderness survival and has brought some of those lessons into his role at Rooster Springs Elementary, most recently teaching students about the compass at the beginning of the semester.

“I grew up camping and being outdoors,” Spear said. “I became a member of the American Camping Association, which has a plateau of achievements. I went through that plateau, then got more involved and began to learn about survival skills through that organization. It eventually turned into me teaching survival skills in high elements.”

Spear’s extensive experience with survival skills has led him to write a book on the topic.

“I’m publishing a book on survival skills, not only in high elements but how to make a fire without matches and how to read a compass,” Spear said. “Too many kids today are indoors. They need to be outdoors. I want to teach outdoor skills and how to enjoy the outdoors.”

When he and his wife first settled in Texas in 2016 to be closer to their grandchildren, Spear quickly learned retirement was not for him. He served as a substitute teacher for two years, then worked for Goodwill before getting a call from Rooster Springs about a job opening.

“I was never satisfied just sitting home,” Spear said. “It wasn’t for me.”

Spear’s experience has been a blessing to Rooster Springs with administrators and teachers expressing their gratitude for his help during an unprecedented school year.

“Mr. Spear has been an amazing addition to the Rooster Springs family,” said principal Steve Novickas. “He brings so much knowledge and expertise to our building. He has a wide variety of experiences and passions. Just sitting down and having a conversation with him is amazing to see what he has done in his lifetime.”

While teaching has been a life-long career for Spear, teaching younger kids is something that is new to Spear, but an experience that has brought him much joy.

“I have enjoyed teaching my whole life. Most of the people I’ve taught were adults or high school kids or middle school kids. I have taught younger kids but not on a grander scale,” Spear said. “But here, I love it. These kids are so ingenious and smart. I have to think their parents are doing a good job of rearing them because it’s a joy teaching here. I’ve always taught and I enjoy teaching and I will until the day I die probably.”

A los 80 años, Robert Spear, asistente de instrucción de la escuela primaria Rooster Springs, tiene una formación académica que abarca cinco décadas impresionantes.

Mientras trabajaba como consultor viajero para la Mesa Directiva de la Escuela Dominical de la Convención Bautista del Sur (SBC), el interés de Spear en la política se despertó después de que le presentaran al ex presidente Jimmy Carter, quien en ese momento era gobernador de Georgia. “Después de conocer a Carter, construimos una confraternidad juntos y visité su casa muchas veces,” dijo Spear.

Esa conexión llevó a Spear a ser elegido y a servir dos años en un comité que propuso nombres para puestos de legisladores estatales, lo que eventualmente condujo a la exitosa campaña para un juez de la Corte Suprema de Luisiana.

Después de tres décadas como ministro y trabajando con la SBC, Spear se convirtió en maestro de preparatoria durante 13 años en Georgia. Luego se desempeñó como naturalista durante cinco años para los Parques y Sitios Históricos de Georgia en el Parque Estatal Fort Mountain, enseñando el folclore nativo americano y todas las áreas de la naturaleza.

Durante más de 50 años, Spear ha enseñado el tema de supervivencia en la naturaleza y ha aportado algunas de esas lecciones a su papel en Rooster Springs Elementary, y más recientemente, al comienzo del semestre, enseñó a los alumnos a usar la brújula.

“Crecí acampando y pasando tiempo al aire libre,” dijo Spear. “Me convertí en miembro de la asociación American Camping Association, que tiene una meseta de logros. Pasé por esa meseta, luego me involucré más y comencé a aprender sobre habilidades de supervivencia a través de esa organización. Eventualmente se convirtió en un mi trabajo enseñando habilidades de supervivencia en climas extremos y altas elevaciones."

La amplia experiencia de Spear con las habilidades de supervivencia lo ha llevado a escribir un libro sobre el tema.

“Estoy publicando un libro sobre habilidades de supervivencia, no solo en elevaciones altas, sino también sobre cómo hacer un fuego sin fósforos, y cómo leer una brújula,” dijo Spear. “Demasiados niños hoy pasan su tiempo adentro. Necesitan estar al aire libre. Quiero enseñar habilidades al aire libre y cómo disfrutar del aire libre."

Cuando él y su esposa se establecieron por primera vez en Texas en 2016 para estar más cerca de sus nietos, Spear rápidamente se dio cuenta de que la jubilación no era para él. Se desempeñó como maestro sustituto durante dos años, luego trabajó para Goodwill antes de recibir una llamada de la primaria Rooster Springs sobre una oferta de trabajo.

“Nunca me sentí satisfecho con solo sentarme en casa,” dijo Spear. "No fue para mí."

La experiencia de Spear ha sido una bendición para Rooster Springs, y los administradores y maestros expresaron su gratitud por su ayuda durante un año escolar sin precedentes.

"El señor Spear ha sido una adición increíble a la familia de Rooster Springs,” dijo el director Steve Novickas. “Aporta tanto conocimiento y experiencia a nuestro edificio. Tiene una amplia variedad de experiencias y pasiones. Simplemente sentarse y tener una conversación con él es increíble para ver lo que ha hecho en su vida."

Si bien la enseñanza ha sido una carrera de toda la vida para Spear, enseñar a los niños más pequeños es algo nuevo para Spear, pero es una experiencia que le ha brindado mucha alegría.

“He disfrutado enseñando toda mi vida. La mayoría de las personas a las que he enseñado han sido adultos o niños de preparatoria o de secundaria. He enseñado a niños más pequeños, pero no en una escala mayor,” dijo Spear. “Pero aquí, me encanta. Estos niños son tan ingeniosos e inteligentes. Tengo que pensar que sus padres están haciendo un buen trabajo criándolos porque es un placer enseñar aquí. Siempre he enseñado y disfruto enseñando y probablemente lo haré hasta el día de mi muerte.”
