SSMS STUDENT WINS THGC VISUAL ARTS STATE CONTEST

Rising Dripping Springs High School freshman and former Sycamore Springs Middle School student Sophia Johnson was honored by the Texas Holocaust and Genocide Commission (THGC) by being named the middle school winner in the Visual Arts category of the 2021 Friends of THGC Student Contest.
The contest theme was Sites of Memory and open to Texas students in Grades 6-12. The contest charged students with choosing a place/event in Holocaust or genocide history to research. Students then created a memorial in the form of an original poem, drawing, or 3-D model that they imagined could be placed at the chosen location to commemorate the event that occurred there. In addition, students were required to submit a video in which they explained how the memorial they created serves to commemorate the event/place they researched.
Johnson chose to commemorate the Holocaust with a drawing titled “Only Five.” More than 110 students entered the competition; Johnson received $250 for capturing first place.

Sophia Johnson, alumna de la preparatoria Dripping Springs High School y ex alumna de Sycamore Springs Middle School, fue reconocida por la Comisión del Holocausto y Genocidio de Texas (THGC) al ser nombrada ganadora en la categoría de secundaria por su entrada de artes visuales al concurso 2021 Friends of THGC Student Contest.
El tema del concurso fue Sitios de Recuerdo, abierto a estudiantes de Texas en los grados 6-12. El objetivo del concurso fue que los estudiantes eligieran un lugar o evento para investigar en la historia del Holocausto o del genocidio. Luego, los estudiantes crearon un monumento en forma de un poema original, un dibujo, o un modelo tridimensional el cual imaginaron que se podría colocar en el lugar elegido para conmemorar el evento que ocurrió allí. Además, los estudiantes debían enviar un video en el que explicaban cómo el monumento que crearon sirve para conmemorar el evento o lugar que investigaron.
Johnson eligió conmemorar el Holocausto con un dibujo titulado "Solo cinco." Más de 110 estudiantes participaron en la competencia; Johnson recibió $250 por capturar el primer lugar.
