NOTE ON FIRST-DAY TRAFFIC

August 18, 2021

We are aware that many areas around our schools experienced heavy traffic yesterday (August 17). This is typical for the first day of school as more families drive their children to and from school and campuses adjust to new routines.

In particular, we know that Walnut Springs Elementary and Dripping Springs Middle School experienced heavy congestion during pick-up time, which caused delays. Walnut Springs Elementary’s longer-than-expected dismissal, coupled with early arriving Dripping Springs Middle School parents, created a back-up on Tiger Lane and at the entrance.

Our school administrators and district staff have met with representatives of the Hays County Constable’s Office and have adjusted the pick-up process for today. We will continue to have law enforcement officials assisting with directing traffic at key intersections as our administrators work to streamline their dismissal plans moving forward.

We also recognize that the volume of vehicles traveling down Highway 290 in our community continues to grow. While this trend is out of the district’s control, we know that factor directly impacts our schools and families.

We acknowledge that this situation may have been frustrating for those who were impacted. Our staff are working quickly to find solutions that will facilitate an efficient traffic flow in this area.
