END-OF-YEAR MESSAGE FROM SUPERINTENDENT WASHBURN
Dear DSISD Parents and Community,
As we approach the end of the 2019-20 school year, I’d like to offer a sincere thank-you to our staff, students, parents and community. These unprecedented times have impacted each of us in ways we could have never imagined. Through all these changes resulting from the pandemic – remote learning, social distancing, Stay at Home Orders and the temporary closures of businesses and services – we have remained positive and supportive. Our students, staff, parents, and community have rallied together to embrace these challenges and work together. All of our stakeholders have displayed C.A.R.E. (Collaboration, Adaptability, Resilience and Empathy) throughout the past two months. I believe that this determination will continue to serve us well as we continue to navigate the challenges that lie ahead. I want to take this opportunity to share with you our plans moving forward into the summer and fall.
Summer Update
Based on guidance provided by the state, our concerns about the health and safety of our students and staff, and the current status of the pandemic situation, we have determined that we will continue to provide summer school and our ESY program through remote learning. In addition to protecting our staff and students, this will enable our teachers to continue to refine our remote learning processes and practices, and identify the most effective tools and strategies that are available.
We have announced that summer camps offered through our Community Services Department have been canceled through the month of June, some of which have been tentatively rescheduled. We will continue to monitor the health pandemic to determine the status of our July camps. Our goal is to communicate our decision by mid-June. The University Scholastic League (UIL) has issued guidance regarding sports and extracurricular activities. This guidance permits districts to conduct strength and conditioning programs. The UIL has provided very extensive safety protocols that must be followed and are aligned with state and CDC recommendations. The DSISD Athletics Department will be communicating more information about this program to our athletes and parents soon.
Fall Planning
We know that the million-dollar question that our stakeholders have right now is what will the 2020-21 school year look like? The answer to that question is continuing to evolve each day/week. We have begun the planning process for the 2020–21 school year based on guidance from the governor, TEA, state and local officials, and health officials. As the pandemic continues to evolve, we know that we have to create an educational system that is adaptable and flexible. We must create systems that are responsive to the health conditions in our community and support the academic and social-emotional needs of our students.
We are in the process of planning and developing several scenarios for learning that will enable us to meet these needs: ranging from our traditional face-to-face instructional model with increased health and safety protocols … to a continuation of 100 percent remote learning … to a hybrid/blended model that would combine in-person and remote learning. This includes looking at scenarios where we are open, but under some capacity restrictions (ex. 25% capacity, …). Below is a graphic representation of these potential scenarios that we are exploring for the fall.
While we are focused on being prepared for all potential situations, the decision on which of these scenarios will be implemented will be based on the current pandemic status as well as state/local ordinances and requirements. Our district’s final decision on the learning scenario selected will be led by our number-one priority: the health and well-being of our students, staff, and community members. We also recognize that we have some students, staff and families with medical/health circumstances that may impact their ability to engage in some of these scenarios. We are considering these factors as well.
We recognize that there are areas for improvement in our remote learning delivery model. Over the summer, our Learning and Innovation team and instructional leaders will reflect on our remote learning process, and analyze feedback from our students, parents and teachers to identify ways that we can improve the experience for all. We will use this information to enhance and improve, in the form of “Remote Learning Model 2.0” should the situation require it.
Calendar Discussion
Mike Morath, the commissioner of TEA, has been sharing with superintendents several potential optional calendar models for districts to consider for the upcoming school year and beyond. These scenarios include earlier start dates and end dates, with longer breaks throughout the school year. Each of these options has significant implications for our schools, staff, and communities. A new calendar would impact our curriculum, teacher schedules/recruitment, school operations, and parent and family work schedules. Based on the complexity and depth of impact on stakeholder groups, we have decided not to make a change to our calendar for the 2020-21 school year at this time.
Final Thoughts
Regardless of the scenario in which we find ourselves in the fall, we know that we will be doing things differently. We will put in place systems and processes to align with the identified and prescribed health and safety guidelines from the state, TEA and CDC in the areas of transportation, child nutrition, school operations and logistical processes. These scenarios include operating schools at varying occupancy capacities and schedules if required. We recognize the importance of continuing to provide support for our students, staff, and families in the areas of academics and social-emotional needs. Recognizing that these are unsettling times, we want you to know that we are preparing for multiple scenarios in the fall and that with each scenario, we are focused on keeping the health and safety of our students, staff and families as our top priority. During these times it is also important that we continue to come together to support one another. Six months ago, I sent you a letter introducing myself and I included a quote to convey my appreciation for the opportunity to join such an incredible school district and community. That quote continues to ring true to me today. During this time, I have seen first-hand how our students, staff, parents, and community members continue to unite together to embrace the challenges that come our way. I cannot think of another place I would rather be than Dripping Springs ISD! Thank you again for partnering with us as we continue to navigate through these uncharted times together.

ESTIMADOS PADRES DE FAMILIA DE DSISD:
A medida que nos acercamos al final del año escolar 2019-20, me gustaría ofrecer un sincero agradecimiento a nuestro personal, alumnos, padres de familia y comunidad. Estos tiempos sin precedentes nos han impactado a todos de una manera que nunca podríamos haber imaginado. Actualización de verano
Basado en la orientación proporcionada por el estado, nuestras preocupaciones sobre la salud y la seguridad de nuestros alumnos y del personal, y el estado actual de la situación de pandemia, hemos determinado que continuaremos brindando la instrucción de verano y nuestro programa ESY a través del aprendizaje remoto. Planes de Otoño
Sabemos que la pregunta principal que nuestros grupos de interés tienen ahora es cómo será el año escolar 2020-21. La respuesta a esa pregunta continúa evolucionando cada día/semana. Hemos comenzado el proceso de planificación para el año escolar 2020–21 basado en la orientación del gobernador, la TEA, de los funcionarios estatales y locales, y los funcionarios de salubridad. A medida que la pandemia continúa evolucionando, sabemos que tenemos que crear un sistema educativo que sea adaptable y flexible. Reconocemos que hay áreas de mejoramiento en nuestro modelo para la entrega de aprendizaje remoto. Durante el verano, nuestro equipo de Aprendizaje e Innovación y los líderes de instrucción reflexionarán sobre nuestro proceso de aprendizaje remoto y analizarán los comentarios de nuestros alumnos, padres de familia, y maestros para identificar formas en que podemos mejorar la experiencia para todos. Discusión del calendario

Pensamientos finales

Estos escenarios incluyen operar escuelas con diferentes capacidades de ocupación y horarios si es necesario. Reconocemos la importancia de continuar brindando apoyo a nuestros estudiantes, personal y familias en las áreas académicas y las necesidades socioemocionales. Reconociendo que estos son tiempos inquietantes, queremos que sepa que nos estamos preparando para múltiples escenarios en el otoño y que, con cada escenario, estamos enfocados en mantener la salud y la seguridad de nuestros alumnos y el personal como nuestra principal prioridad. Durante estos tiempos sin precedente, también es importante que sigamos uniéndonos para apoyarnos mutuamente. Hace seis meses, les envié una carta presentándome e incluí una cita para expresar mi agradecimiento por la oportunidad de unirme a un distrito escolar y una comunidad tan increíbles. Esa cita (“Al expresar nuestra gratitud, nunca debemos olvidar que el aprecio mayor no es el pronunciar las palabras, sino de vivirlas,” JFK) sigue resonando fiel en mí hoy. Durante este tiempo, he visto a primera mano cómo nuestros alumnos, el personal, los padres y los miembros de la comunidad continúan uniéndose para enfrentarse a los desafíos que se nos presentan. ¡No puedo pensar en otro lugar en el que preferiría estar más que en Dripping Springs ISD!
