BIBEAU IS STATE CHAMPION; TWO OTHER QUALIFIERS PLACE
At the 5A UIL State Championship May 29-30, Dripping Springs High School senior Max Bibeau won the state title in Persuasive Extemporaneous Speaking. This was his second time to be a state finalist in that event; last year he placed sixth. Junior Campbell Melton (left) was a state finalist in the same event, placing fourth. Junior Addie Mae Villas (right) placed fifth overall in Lincoln Douglas Debate, barely missing a chance to advance to semifinals. Only the top 12 students in the state qualify for the state tournament.
In Persuasive Extemporaneous Speaking, students are given 30 minutes to prepare a seven-minute speech. They draw five current events related questions from an envelope and choose one to use for their speech. Students reference articles from newspapers and magazines to use in their speeches. At the state tournament, there is one preliminary round and one final round. Max's topic in the final round was whether the U.S. is headed for a recession. Campbell's topic was whether the U.S. and Iran are headed toward a conflict.
Lincoln Douglas is a one-on-one debate format where students debate about values. The Lincoln Douglas topic this year was “Resolved: On balance, artificial intelligence improves humanity.”
BIBEAU ES CAMPEÓN ESTATAL; UNA AVANZA Y OTRA PARTICIPA
En el Campeonato Estatal 5A UIL del 29 al 30 de mayo, Max Bibeau de último año de la preparatoria Dripping Springs High School, ganó el título estatal en discurso extemporáneo persuasivo. Por segunda vez, fue finalista estatal en ese evento; el año pasado salió en sexto lugar. Junior Campbell Melton fue finalista estatal en el mismo evento, quedando en cuarto lugar. Addie Mae Villas, de tercer año, salió en quinto lugar en el Debate de Lincoln Douglas, perdiendo la oportunindad de avanzar por un punto. Solamente los 12 mejores alumnos del estado califican para el torneo estatal.
En el discurso extemporáneo persuasivo, los alumnos tienen 30 minutos para preparar un discurso de siete minutos. Ellos escogen de un sobre cinco preguntas relacionadas a eventos actuales y eligen una para usar en su discurso. Los alumnos usan artículos de periódicos y revistas para usar en sus discursos. En el torneo estatal, hay una ronda preliminar y una ronda final. El tema de Max en la ronda final fue si Estados Unidos se dirige a una recesión. El tema de Campbell era si Estados Unidos e Irán se dirigen hacia un conflicto.
Lincoln Douglas es un formato de debate uno a uno donde los estudiantes debaten sobre los valores. El tema de Lincoln Douglas de este año fue "Resuelto: En general, la inteligencia artificial mejora a la humanidad."
