SSMS QUALIFY FOR NATIONAL HISTORY DAY STATE CONTEST
Nine projects from Sycamore Springs Middle School participated in the state competition of the National History Day Contest April 28, with two projects involving six students received special recognition. This is the first time that DSISD has entered an organized contingency of students in this contest. The state competition was held at the University of Texas at Austin and the Bob Bullock State History Museum.
Two projects created by six students received the Distinguished Achievement Award, which means that they were ranked between fourth and 10th place in their category (actual scores were not released).
One of those groups -- Kade Brunson, Boston Papp, and Josh Oliphant -- also received the Regional Special Award for their project "Imprisonment of the Innocent: Japanese Internment After the Deadly Attacks on Pearl Harbor."
The other Distinguished Achievement Project was by Priya Chandrani, Ali Gartner, and Krystin Nixon for “Thirteen Days on the Brink of Nuclear War.”
Every year National History Day Contest frames students’ research within a historical theme. The theme is chosen for the broad application to world, national, or state history and its relevance to ancient history or to the more recent past. This year’s theme is "Conflict and Compromise in History." Students may enter in several different categories.
ALUMNOS DE SSMS PARTICIPAN EN EL CONCURSO ESTATAL DEL DÍA DE HISTORIA NACIONAL
Nueve proyectos de la secundaria Sycamore Springs participaron en la competencia estatal del día de historia nacional el 28 de abril, donde dos de los proyectos recibieron reconocimiento especial. Esta es la primera vez que un grupo organizado de DSISD participó en este concurso. La competencia estatal tuvo lugar en la Universidad de Texas en Austin y en el museo estatal de historia Bob Bullock.
Dos proyectos creados por seis de los alumnos recibieron el premio de logro distinguido, lo que significa que salieron entre el cuarto y 10º lugar en sus categorías (las calificaciones exactas no fueron publicadas).
Uno de esos grupos -- Kade Brunson, Boston Papp, y Josh Oliphant – también recibieron el premio especial regional por su proyecto sobre la encarcelación de los japoneses después del ataque a Pearl Harbor ("Imprisonment of the Innocent: Japanese Internment After the Deadly Attacks on Pearl Harbor.")

Cada año el concurso del día de historia nacional enmarca la investigación estudiantil dentro de un tema histórico. El tema es escogido por su amplia aplicación a la historia mundial, nacional o estatal y su relevancia a la historia antigua o a un pasado reciente. El tema de este año fue sobre el conflicto y el compromiso en la historia ("Conflict and Compromise in History.") Los estudiantes pueden participar en varias categorías.
